Before I even left London, I was already planning my return. The two months I studied abroad in London last summer were some of the best times of my life, and I didn't want that to end.
The idea of chatting up London and AIU to potential study abroad students seemed simple enough as I had been doing that anyway! Looking back a year to the time when I was getting ready to leave for London; I realize how much I learned from friends who had studied abroad before me. They were able to share their experiences and gave me helpful hints on how to prepare for my journey, and things to see and do while in London. I understand how overwhelmed students might feel about studying abroad, which is why I think the Student Ambassador Program is beneficial to both AIU and future study abroad students.
After speaking with interested students about studying abroad, I found that many were overwhelmed by the process and planning that goes into studying abroad. Too, I was surprised that some had never heard of the AIU programs, or if they had they knew very little about them. This gave me a chance revisit my own experience at AIU, and get students excited about studying abroad. When I tell them I've decided to return for another two terms, they begin to inquire deeper about the advantages and benefits of AIU's programs. Some are interested in other destinations and I simply apply some of my experiences to help them with their research and evaluation. Others have already decided to attend AIU so I serve as a reliable source of information for answers to their questions. I've been in their position and know how they are feeling so it makes me feel good to know that I'm able to ease some of their worries, just as my friends did for me.
In addition to this one-on-one contact with future students, I have also been doing things around campus to get the word out about studying abroad at AIU. I began by hanging posters around campus in sororities, TXCD buildings, dorms and campus unions. I've also spoken with two different groups about studying abroad. We all gathered at my place to eat and chat about the benefits of studying abroad and my experience at AIU. During both of my presentations I had a chance to introduce the AIU program by showing a short video put together by AIU, displaying projects, looking through photos, and talking with them and answering questions they had about studying abroad.
In May, I will be returning to London to speak with students about what I've been doing as a Student Ambassador for AIU, and how they can get involved. If there are any students who want to return to London as badly as I did, my presentation will ensure that they know there are opportunities available to help make their return possible. But I'm not just going back to London to give a presentation. I've also enrolled in courses for two more terms. I really feel like I've gained experiences both personally and professionally while at AIU. While studying abroad last summer, I got a better understanding of my career path, and how I can make it happen. AIU offers courses that are complimentary to what is offered at my home school, and these courses will help me gain great experience for my future. My first study abroad experience was such an eye-opener; I can't wait to see what the second time around does for me!
