Chantay Dingle-EL
October – December 2005 London Internship

I studied abroad in London, England, for the 10-week (October-December 2005) session. What motivated me to study abroad? I grew up in a community where the only people who had an opportunity to travel abroad were either rich, in the music or sports industry, or had joined the armed forces. One day my son asked the question what would make the most of my college experience. It was my dream to travel. I wanted to see what I had only seen in history books and daydreamed about as a child. My son said, "Do it!" I wanted the opportunity to show my child that this average, single, working mother could do something wonderful and different.

I enjoyed my classes in London. The teachers are very driven and strive for excellence, which encourages the students to want to achieve. I took two classes: Intro to Business and Public Speaking/Communications. I liked the way my classes were small and the professors encouraged class participation and group activity, which made it easy to interact with students inside as well as outside the classroom. The experiences I gained in these classes I now use in my daily life; and the friends I now continue to engage. I have truly made this decision last a lifetime.

What I learned from this experience is that anything is possible. I stood 2 feet away from the Mona Lisa, I visited the house of Ann Frank and the palaces of queens and kings, and I saw churches of the holy. I have learned that life is a wonderful gift and when you are presented with an opportunity, take it. I was fortunate to study and complete an internship abroad in my field, to meet and work with professionals in international technologies. At Euro RSCG Riley, the IT department operates not only as a help desk and troubleshooting department, but also as visionaries, moving the company forward through technology. The main focus of the IT department and its managers is to view the company's requirements and its processes, research the daily function of those processes, and implement a system that will adapt to those functions. In short, create a system to enable people to adapt to the changing technology.

When I look back at what I have accomplished, I am humbled by my experiences, the people I have met, and the friends I have made. I am truly thankful for the opportunity.
