Daniel DeWitt
Western Michigan University – Business

Instead of scrambling for a summer internship or job last summer, I decided to take my studies to American Intercontinental University's London campus. What an unbelievable adventure! The experiences I was exposed to last summer in Western Europe have left me with priceless memories and knowledge that I could have never absorbed here in the States.

I have never learned so much in such a short period of time. I learned not only about the subjects discussed in the classroom, but additionally learned a lot about both myself and also the cultures I visited. The classes I enrolled in offered me the incredible balance of not only being efficient in working towards my degree, but also the opportunity to be exposed to subject matter that is just not available here in Kalamazoo. I took a business class which in turn satisfied an economics class I would have to take here anyways, and also enrolled in a course titled "Survey of British Museums" in which our class visited approximately 15 museums right in the heart of London and got to discuss and analyze various exhibits.

I enjoyed seeing the beautiful art and truly took pleasure in writing papers on different displays, but my learning went far outside of the academic setting. Living with four strangers from all over the world helped me gain understanding in how other youths go about living and socializing. My roommates' backgrounds and homes had a wide variance which included Nigeria, New York City, Omaha Nebraska, and Hartford, Connecticut. I quickly became friends with those strangers and constantly embarked on adventures ranging from simple trips to the market or grocery store to weekend getaways in Switzerland and Spain.

Last summer I was fortunate enough to travel outside London to Bath, Stonehenge, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Marseilles, Venice, Florence, and Rome. It was when I traveled that I feel I learned the most. Whether it be getting around London to go out or traveling spontaneously to the festival of the running of the bulls, I learned the most about people on the road. It is when you take away the comforts of friends, family, and home that you can really see someone's character come out. I connected with many people while traveling from all over the world with entirely different points of view. It was most interesting to hear what others pondered or believed, but everyone was also very open and welcoming and urged to hear about what I had to say and where my voyage had landed me. I also made a conscious effort to talk to the local people, stay in the bed and breakfasts, and visit the places that most tourists would overlook. It's important to get away from the tourist shops and actually assimilate your own ethnography from your own point of view. I treasure the relationships that I developed and will never forget the experiences I shared.
